I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!
Who doesn’t love this tasty treat? We learned ALL about it at the Museum of Ice Cream in San Francisco.
This might have been the coolest museum we’ve ever been too. It was definitely the tastiest!
We stepped inside the vault to unlock the history of ice cream…
“Remember those crazy ideas you dreamed up as a kid? The museum of ice cream is the place where ideas are transformed into real life experiences. A place where flavors are mysteries, toppings are toys and sprinkles make the world a better place. Our mission is to design environments that bring people together and provoke imagination.” – MOIC
To our surprise, nearly every room included taste testings….
We were on a major sugar high.
Luckily, there were fun activities to help burn off all the extra energy in our little ones!
We loved our time here. What we love even more is a healthier version of ice cream….or “nice cream”. Nice cream is basically a frozen dessert made without eggs, heavy cream, added sugars or artificial colors/flavors. Depending on exactly how you make it, it can also be fat-free, vegan and gluten free.
This simple to make ice cream is made in the blender or food processor by pureeing frozen bananas as the base. Promise it won’t taste like bananas! It takes on whatever other ingredients you mix it. Then the flavors and add-ins are virtually endless. There are so many taste combinations and ingredients you can experiment with. Simply freeze a bunch of bananas to keep in your freezer so you can make this yummy treat anytime you have an ice cream craving. Wait until your bananas are very ripe (even starting to develop brown spots on the peel) since they are sweeter and more flavorful to freeze this way. Be sure to PEEL your bananas first (they will be impossible to get the peel off after frozen!). Then cut them into 2 inch pieces and freeze on a tray. Once frozen, place in a freezer safe bag. They can last 3-4 months in the freezer.
Blending the frozen bananas yields a smooth, creamy texture that allows you to satisfy your cravings without the guilt. A traditional cup of ice cream has around 274 calories, 14 grams of fat, 28 grams of sugar, 0.5 grams of fiber, 2.3 grams of protein. Whereas, 1 banana has around 100 calories, 3 grams of fiber, fat/cholesterol/sodium free and is a good source of potassium, vitamin C, B6. Nice cream allows you to trade empty calories for a treat higher in fiber, vitamins/minerals, healthy fats (if using a nut butter add-in) and keeps you fuller for longer than traditional ice cream. It’s the perfect after dinner sweet treat or makes a great snack for kids after school. You can even sneak in some vegetables that were undetectable to our picky kids.
If eaten right after blended, the ice cream will have a soft-serve texture. If you prefer a firmer texture, just transfer to freezer safe containers and freeze until desired texture. Nice cream will last in an airtight container for several months.
Forgo the traditional sprinkles and dyed red cherries.
