Healthier Frosting for a Happy Birthday

We’d like to wish a very Happy 8th Birthday to The Recipe Redux. To celebrate, we’re sharing a favorite party recipe: Chocolate Avocado Frosting. We love parties and kid parties can be especially fun to plan. Our Donut Party was definitely a winner with both the kids and moms.

With three daughters between the two of us, we’ve had many visits to The American Girl Doll Store over the years. The San Francisco Store has been frequented for many special occasions over the years. Their cafe is so adorable and actually has really great food. We’ve gone for holiday tea parties, mother-daughter dates and of course, birthdays.

While birthdays are certainly an excuse to indulge in sugary treats, why not swap traditional cake frosting for a healthier alternative? A delicious alternative to typical frosting that is laden with white sugar, butter and possibly trans fats,or artificial colors/flavors is Chocolate Avocado frosting. This version is vegan, gluten-free and full of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. Additionally, avocados are very nutrient-dense with a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, fiber and phytochemicals that play a role in cancer prevention.

This frosting is simple to make, tastes rich and decadent (without a hint of avocado flavor- promise!) Serve this up at your next party, but don’t tell the kids that it is made from avocado until they’re done devouring it!

Chocolate Avocado Frosting

Rich, smooth, guilt-free frosting

Course Dessert
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 2 minutes
Total Time 7 minutes
Servings 1 cup

  • 2 avocado ripe, large
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 9 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 c unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

  1. Simply blend all ingredients until smooth. If frosting is too thick, you can thin out with a tiny bit of water or coconut oil until desired consistency achieved.
